JUNIOR SAILING

On the Water

Sailing education and on the water instruction are the centerpieces of the RCYC Junior Sailing Program. Significant time is spent on the water in closely supervised activities including, fundamental points of sail, practice drills, and sailboat races intended to build confidence and teach safe boat handling.

In the Classroom

Classroom instruction is provided in basic knots, boat rigging, boat maintenance, right of way rules, sailing skill games, sea-weather conditions, and safety-emergency procedures.

Activities

The program is designed to be fun as well as educational. Sailing and classroom activities are supplemented by an RCYC regatta, regattas with other local area clubs, sailing excursions and field trips.

OBJECTIVES

Our objectives at the completion of the summer sailing program are for students to be able to:

1.    Apply the concepts of seamanship (i.e. boat, sails, rigging, knots, rules of the road, weather, tides, chart use and safety equipment) to sail safely and have fun.

2.    Demonstrate positive attitude and behaviors demonstrating respect for fellow students, competing sailors, instructors, parents, club members guests and club facilities.

3.    Utilize sailing skills to effectively sail triangular and windward leeward courses during class and at local regattas.

4.    Demonstrate responsibility and safety in the proper use, maintenance, and storage of program boats, sails and rigging.

5.    Participate and socialize in group interactions during on-land classes, on the water, on field trips, and at regattas.

6.    Communicate effectively with other sailing students and instructors at RCYC and interclub sailing competition.

7.    Demonstrate a deep respect for the sea and the elements of weather.

8.    Foster and admiration for the sport of sailing which will perpetuate sailing activities at RCYC in both competition and family recreation.
