Mission
Statement
The mission of
the RCYC Junior Sailing Program is to deliver training designed to educate
youth sailors to skillfully and safely operate small sailboats, develop a
strong personal foundation for the sport of sailing and anchor our clubs
future in the sport.

JUNIOR SAILING
On the Water
Sailing
education and on the water instruction are the centerpieces of the RCYC
Junior Sailing Program. Significant time is spent on the water in closely
supervised activities including, fundamental points of sail, practice
drills, and sailboat races intended to build confidence and teach safe boat
handling.
In the
Classroom
Classroom
instruction is provided in basic knots, boat rigging, boat maintenance,
right of way rules, sailing skill games, sea-weather conditions, and
safety-emergency procedures.
Activities
The program is
designed to be fun as well as educational. Sailing and classroom activities
are supplemented by an RCYC regatta, regattas with other local area clubs,
sailing excursions and field trips.
OBJECTIVES
Our objectives at the completion of the summer
sailing program are for students to be able to:
1.
Apply the concepts of seamanship (i.e.
boat, sails, rigging, knots, rules of the road, weather, tides, chart use
and safety equipment) to sail safely and have fun.
2.
Demonstrate positive attitude and
behaviors demonstrating respect for fellow students, competing sailors,
instructors, parents, club members guests and club facilities.
3.
Utilize sailing skills to effectively
sail triangular and windward leeward courses during class and at local
regattas.
4.
Demonstrate responsibility and safety in
the proper use, maintenance, and storage of program boats, sails and
rigging.
5.
Participate and socialize in group
interactions during on-land classes, on the water, on field trips, and at
regattas.
6.
Communicate effectively with other
sailing students and instructors at RCYC and interclub sailing competition.
7.
Demonstrate a deep respect for the sea
and the elements of weather.
8.
Foster and admiration for the sport of
sailing which will perpetuate sailing activities at RCYC in both competition
and family recreation.
